Years before that, he made history on the Bowery itself. Most brokers said the Federal-period buildings at 140 and 142 Bowery would never clear $15 million. Matthew set a record price per square foot for the street, on buildings where 140 Bowery traces back to roughly 1799, among the oldest structures the Bowery has ever known.
